Students writing their first university research proposal may feel a bit daunted by the prospect, but this video will walk through the different sections of a proposal and talk about why it is important to invest the time and energy to produce a solid, well-written research proposal. The purpose and objective of the proposal is to convince your academic supervisor that your research is appropriate for your program, is a worthwhile project, meets the criteria for your thesis or dissertation, is achievable within the time limitations of your program, and demonstrates that you have the ability to carry it through. A well-written research proposal will serve as your map or blueprint for your research plan. It will help you stay on track and will guide any decisions that may come up in the course of your research. It demonstrates that you are well prepared and gives a positive academic impression of your organizing skills, ability to think through details, and your academic writing. It might be a funding requirement if you are applying for financial support. In the end, the research will only be as good as the proposal so the initial investment in time and detail will pay off.
